We white men are starting to feel nervous because we see that we might get shamed or fired, yes. We do not, however, “live, every day, in a culture of fear.” We’re starting to taste just a little of the fear that women and other minorities really do live in. I can demonstrate it, too: When you picked your clothes today did you select items based on whether they’re more or less likely to invite sexual harassment? Did you take a route to work or school that you’ve carefully planned for your own physical safety? Did you avoid eye contact with someone because you felt that if you looked at them he would see it as an invitation to accost you? Most women feel this every day. You and I are losing some of our abilities, for sure, but we still have more freedom and safety and ability to express ourselves than folks who aren’t like us.
